Carbon Offset

I have felt so bad about how I have smelled all day that I decided I had to do something about it. I discovered there is no possible way to make myself smell better other than waiting it out, so I had to go green. Since eating the garlic yesterday, I fear my carbon footprint has become too large. I went to one of those hippie sites and used a carbon calculator to work out my “personal carbon emissions.” Of course, this was only a rough estimate. Based on the results I had several options to “carbon offset” my emissions.

I could have gone with an emissions broker who could help me decide on ways to offset my emissions. That seemed a little overboard. Knowing that the average American puts out more than 23 tons of CO2 a year, and feeling like I single-handedly put out a ton or two just this weekend, I know I have to do something. But what?

First, they say I should “reduce what I can and offset what I can’t.” I can do things like add insulation to my house or switching my light bulbs to CFL’s. I could also buy a smaller hybrid car, put solar panels on my roof or have my home power by wind by building a windmill. Wind power in the US is growing at a rate of 37% per year.

After thinking about all of my options, I think I am just going to go buy a plant and put it in my backyard. Maybe I’ll eat less garlic next time, but I think I’d rather buy another plant.

  1. are you going to take care of the plant? i just want to make sure that you are taking full responsibility for the care of this plant. you know what tends to happen to plants if i am left in charge of them.

  2. Let me know how the plant works out…if it were in my house/yard and I was in charge – it would soon be a DEAD PLANT!

  3. thanks for the laugh! u r a funny man.

  4. You two are a piece of work! Jenny and I are laughing so hard I’m crying.
